10 best messenger apps and chat apps for Android! (Updated 2019)10 apps to send text and SMS from your PC (and other ways too!)Android Messages
Android Message is a free texting app by Google. In terms of features, Android Messages keeps it light. You'll have some light theming options, some organization and backup features, and a decent search function. The design is entirely Material Design. That means it looks good and it's easy to use. Google also has big plans for this app, including RCS support along with other neat features. This also has a web version for texting on your computer. However, it is a fairly sizable battery drain so it's a hit-or-miss kind of feature.
Chomp SMS
Chomp SMS has been around since the good old days of Android and was one of the very first, really good third party texting apps. It has since evolved into an app that embraces Material Design while still having plenty of features. Some of them include emojis, SMS blocking, quick reply in the notifications, MMS, and group messaging. You can even stop a text mid-send if needed. It also comes with Android Wear and Pushbullet support. There are plenty of other customization features should you want them.
Facebook Messenger
We'll be honest with you. Facebook Messenger isn't a great app. It uses a ton of battery, storage, and RAM. It also has ads. However, chances are that you have it on your device. Facebook has tons of users and it's likely you keep this around because you have those loved ones that just won't switch to something better. If you're going to have it around, you might as well enable its SMS support. That way you can kind of kill two birds with one stone. It has satisfactory SMS integration if that helps. It's not the best option when it comes to texting apps. It is among the most convenient, though, and it'll subtract one app from your app drawer if you already use Facebook Messenger.
Handcent Next SMS
Handcent, along with Chomp SMS, were the first two really good, really popular third party texting apps available on Android. Much like Chomp SMS, Handcent is a powerful and heavy texting application with a ton of features. Some of them include themes, a privacy box to store private conversations, SMS backup, eCards, emojis, and plenty more. One of the more interesting features is Handcent Anywhere, which lets you text on your computer and tablet if you want. It's had its ups and downs in terms of bugs, but it's usually pretty solid.
Persona 5 IM
We don't see many novelty texting apps anymore. It's a shame, really. Anyway, Persona 5 IM may be the best among them right now. It is a full SMS/MMS app except it uses the same theming structure as the messaging app in Persona 5. It is definitely among the most interesting looking SMS apps on the Play Store and it works pretty well too. There are some personalization options, namely the color theme, the fancy animations, and more. Many apps focus primarily on functionality and that's fine. However, if you just want something simple that looks nothing like anything else you have used (or you're a Persona 5 fan), this could be a lot of fun. It's completely free as far as we can tell.
5 free text apps for Android that send real SMS messages! (Updated 2019)10 best video chat apps for Android!Pulse SMS
Pulse SMS is one of the most unique texting apps on the list. It's like any standard SMS app for the most part. However, there is also a back end that will let you text from your PC, tablet, and other devices. Additionally, it also supports dual-sim devices, blacklisting phone numbers, message backup, and more. Here's how it works. The texting app part of this is completely free. Those who want to also text from PCs, tablets, etc can either pay $0.99 per month or a lifetime fee of $10.99. It's a good way to kill two birds with one stone.
QKSMS
QKSMS is among the simplest and best SMS apps. It's open source and that's always a nice touch. Additionally, the app comes with a bunch of features. Some of them include privacy features such as a blacklist, Android Wear support, and even some nifty accessibility features. Usage is as you would expect. It's not going to blow your mind, but its simplicity is appreciated considering how heavy some texting apps can get. It's free with no advertising. There are some optional in-app purchases as donations as well.
Signal Private Messenger
Signal Private Messenger is actually a messaging app much like Hangouts, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and others. The difference is that this one features end-to-end encryption and itâs been a favorite of many people who value security. It also works on a phone number system and if your contact doesnât have the app then it simply sends a text message. We really liked how seamless that feature is. Itâs simple to use, looks great with Material Design, and it is entirely free to use with no in-app purchases. Itâs also open source, supports group chats, and itâll even make phone calls.
Textra SMS
Textra SMS is among the most solid texting apps on the list. This popular and highly stylish SMS app is also one of the highest rated on the list. It comes with a theme picker (you choose the colors yourself), a dark mode, floating notifications, delayed sending, slide to delete, and plenty of other features. It also comes with direct support for Android Wear, Pushbullet, MightyText, and others. You can use most of the features for free. There is a single in-app purchase for $2.99 to unlock the pro version.
YAATA SMS
YAATA SMS is one of a few up and coming texting apps that are really good. It has a bunch of features, including group chat support, schedule message sending, and complete MMS support. If you buy the premium version, youâll also get SMS blacklisting, an auto-responder, auto-forwarding, and the ability to backup and restore your settings in case you buy a new device. It uses Material Design and it looks quite good. It also comes with widgets, and it even has chat heads similar to Facebook Messenger. There are some bugs, but most of them aren't serious.

We've gathered a list of the best apps for doing just that. Many of you probably have unlimited texts as part of your data plan but let's face it, they don't get much use with apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook messenger being so popular. Perhaps you want to ditch Facebook and WhatsApp following the data privacy issues. It makes sense then, to download an SMS app to have a better texting experience with improved security, customization, and more. Jump to:Best for fun features: Mood MessengerMood Messenger is a newer messaging/SMS/MMS app that is perfect for casual users, offering a good spread of nice features from internet messaging apps like animated emojis, location sharing, typing indicator and chat heads. It's also great for the creative types who enjoy customization with a bunch of themes and backgrounds available. Best of all, the app is free with no ads shoved in your face. mood messenger - SMS & MMS messagingBest for themes: GO SMS ProGO SMS Pro is a great all-inclusive texting app. It really helps you get the most out of those unlimited texting plans. There are some advertisements, but often you need to click on the advertisement-animation feature to see them. You have some excellent features but the best part of this app is the themes and stickers. The themes on the GO SMS Pro app are really well designed and integrate well with its interface. You need to download each from Google Play but once you do they are easy to set up. Many of them are free but if you want specialized ones, you need to pay extra. The 'Delay to send' option is a good idea to activate just in case you make a mistake. This happens a lot; I've had plenty of messages I sent I wanted to quickly get back. If you've ever accidentally sent a swear word to a contact then you'll probably want to use the blacklist function so it doesn't go, well..you get the point. GO SMS Pro - Messenger, Free Themes, EmojiBest for customization: Handcent Next SMSIt takes a few minutes to get set up but Handcent Next SMS has some excellent customization features that give you a seamless personalized experience, making texting enjoyable and is similar to messenger apps like WhatsApp or WeChat. You'll notice that it is a really clean experience. It feels like you can move quickly through its functions without clutter everywhere distracting you. It also has features like festive e-cards or text messages for birthdays or holidays. You can even get some inspiration from heartfelt messages made public by other texters. The customization features really make Handcent shine and we highly recommend you take advantage of them. You can use a skin for their interface and there are a few good ones to choose from, which they update frequently. There are some pretty neat themes too. The in-text customization features really keep you coming back because they change the way you interact with texting in general. Handcent Next SMSBest for simplicity: Android MessagesWe're not fans of Hangouts, which complicates the simple process of sending texts, but Android Messages is another story. It makes use of many of Hangouts' finer qualities while cutting out the clutter. Messages has an eye-soothing interface and, as well as sending texts, you can take photos and record audio messages from within the app. It's a typical Google app in that it nails the essentials of what it should do. Android MessagesBest for multiple devices: MySMSMySMS comes garlanded with rave reviews from press and users alike. It's available for Windows, Mac and web browsers as well as Android, which means you can post from a computer or tablet using your Android phone's number. It supports group messaging and MMS, message scheduling, message export and backup, and connects with services such as Evernote, Dropbox and Google Drive. Many of the advanced features require a premium membership, but at just US$9.99 per year, MySMS is hardly going to break the bank. mysms SMS Text Messaging SyncBest for security: Signal Private MessengerIf you like to err on the side of caution, it's hard to overlook Signal Private Messenger. It's super secure â you can't even take screenshots of the app. Signal Private Messenger encrypts your personal communications with end-to-end encryption protocols as soon as you register your number. As you may recall, the NSA has a habit of intercepting SMS content as it passes through data centers. Signal only handles encrypted content so your messages are safe in transit. All of your attachments are also encrypted. Signal Private MessengerBest for comprehensive service: chomp SMSchomp SMS has been around for a long time, and has become one of the most popular Android SMS apps. Its features include a huge array of emojis, passcode app lock, message locks, intense privacy options, blacklists and quick reply popups, not to mention a ton of customization options, plus it offers Pushbullet and Android Wear compatibility. chomp SMSBest looking: QKSMSQKSMS is one of the prettiest SMS apps we've seen, offering Material Design plus a range of themes, night mode, customization, quick replies, group messaging, message scheduling and more in an ad-free environment. The basic app is free but if you want to unlock all the color options and advanced features, you can get premium mode in exchange for a US$1.99 in-app purchase. QKSMS - Open Source MessengerBest all-rounder: EvolveSMS/PulseEvolveSMS is the Google-inspired SMS app that we wish Hangouts was. EvolveSMS is feature-packed, with support for multimedia messages (including GIFs) and even smartwatch compatibility. The default orange interface looks great, but you can also grab more themes if you're willing to drop a little coin for the customization pack. Swiping between conversations and a navigation drawer make it a breeze to navigate, and there are plenty of free pre-loaded customization options. If you want an SMS app that does everything, go with Evolve. EvolveSMS (Text Messaging)The developer of EvolveSMS has made not only one, but two SMS apps and frankly, the second is also deserving of a place on the list. Pulse SMS offers a full-fat SMS app for your phone for free with all the bells and whistles: nice interface, customization, media sharing, contact management, blacklisting and so on. It also lets you use it from other devices such as your laptop, at an additional subscription fee. Pulse SMS (Phone/Tablet/Web)Do you use your unlimited texts? Instant Messaging for BusinessesEver since the advent of the massively popular service Slack, business messaging apps have quickly become the de facto medium for daily communication in all kinds of teams, from groups who make podcasts together to businesses. These messaging apps put instant messaging, text messaging, private forums, video calls, and sometimes even screen-sharing, into one specialized collaboration app. The result is a single place where you can chat with coworkers both in real time and asynchronously. The collaboration can be one-on-one, by invite only, or among whoever in the organization decides to join. Wisely used, such services can boost productivity, improve teamwork, and even help create a corporate culture. Business messaging apps have several advantages over the terrible productivity black hole that is email. First, they encourage brief messages. Due to the layout of these apps and the assumptions people have about how others use them, messages tend to be a sentence or two long instead to multiple paragraphs. Second, many discussions occur on an opt-in basis. You're more than welcome to join a conversation that's applicable and equally welcome to skip it. When people specifically need your input, they use an @ sign before your name to flag you. Third, messaging apps allow for persistent, ongoing conversations, which isn't a strong suit of email. Open a forum called 'Brainstorming,' and people can add an idea whenever it strikes them. Slack may have been one of the first messaging apps to mass-market its services and gain public recognition, but it's hardly the only player in the space. Why Do So Many People Love Slack?People fell in love with Slack early on for one great reason: It has a wide array of features. One feature I have yet to see in another business messaging app is the ability to set notifications for keywords. For example, let's say you work on a project called Riviera. You can set 'Riviera' as a keyword in your notifications, and any time someone uses it in a public channel (that is, not in a direct message or private channel), you get a notification. Slack also integrates with dozens of other tools, so if it doesn't offer something you need, chances are you can tack it on from a third party. For many more suggestions on how to get the most out of Slack, see PCMag's list of 45 Slack tips. Another feature-packed app, Glip by RingCentral, offers a few tools you won't find in Slack (unless you add them by integrating with other services). For example, Glip has collaborative document editing, a team calendar, and task management tools. Glip also has some solid image and PDF markup tools, a real bonus for teams that frequently discuss visual material. If your team is already using the VoIP service RingCentral Office, you're already paying for Glip, which is nicely integrated. Best Alternatives to SlackSlack isn't everyone's cup of tea. It costs a lot more than all its competitors, and some people find the interface too busy and disorganized. If you're looking for a messaging app for your business or team that's different from Slack, I recommend Flock. Flock is one of the best alternatives if you like what Slack has to offer but want a different look and feel, and a lower price for the paid tier of service. The app has a tidy interface, integrated to-do list, and the option to make a read-only message board, which could be used to share information from a legal department, HR, or company executives. Twist is also a very good alternative that costs less and has a totally different layout. Twist was designed to support distributed teams who are often working in different time zones and therefore work asynchronously. It's worth noting, however, that Twist looks a lot like email in many respects. If you have an aversion to both Slack and email, Twist is probably not for you. Best Value for Small BusinessesMany small businesses and organizations can get away with using the free version of a messaging app. But those who need to pay for additional features, increased storage space for uploads, an adequate number of integrations, and everything else that comes with a premium account, should look at Flock and Zoho Cliq. Both cost only $3 per person per month and offer great value for that low price. Another option that packs a lot of value is Workplace by Facebook, a private social network for businesses that includes messaging tools. The setup is a little different from other messaging apps, but you get most of the same features: the ability to have group chats, one-on-one chats, video calls, audio calls, and so forth. Workplace by Facebook starts at $3 per person per month, and the per-person price decreases the more team members you have. Additionally, Facebook only charges for active users. Slack has a similar policy for its rates. Organizations aren't charged for idle accounts. Best Value for Large BusinessesLarger organizations often pay for a lot of software and services, so many that it's not always clear to every department head what's available. If you're part of a large organization, you may want to check whether you already have access to a messaging app before you get a new one. For example, if your business pays for Microsoft Office 365, then you already have access to Microsoft Teams at no extra cost. Whether Microsoft Teams offers what you need and want is another story. There are plenty of differences between Microsoft Teams and Slack. Be sure to review them before making a decision. ![]() Organizations may have other collaboration tools that include chat and messaging functionality. For example, they are commonly found in project management software. Those tools do a great job of supporting discussions related to the project at hand, but they are not suited for more general conversations, such as letting other commuters know about traffic problem or discussing ways to improve office policies. So there are some advantages to having both messaging apps and other collaboration tools with communication functions. Best for Distributed TeamsBest Messaging App For AndroidI already mentioned that Twist was built specifically for distributed teams. When people work in different time zones, real-time communication isn't always possible; but most business messaging apps are designed with synchronous communication as the goal. In Twist, the design of the app makes it much easier to track conversations when you can't follow them in real time. Each discussion goes into its own thread, complete with a subject line. Like other business messaging apps, however, Twist has an opt-in premise and supports @ signs to flag people's attention. Best Free Business Messaging AppsNearly all business-class messaging apps offer a free version of the service. It's hard to say that any one is better than another because the tool that your team or business adopts should be based on your organization-specific needs. The free versions lack certain features or have limitations, but they are not the same across all apps. For example, Slack has an excellent free service, but one of its major limitations is that searches only look through the most recent 10,000 messages. If your team posts on Slack a lot and needs to refer frequently to prior conversations, this limitation could be a showstopper. Slack Free also limits video calls to being one-on-one only, and screen sharing isn't included. Additionally, you can only have 10 integrations with Slack Free. Best Messaging Apps 2018Flock's free tier of service lets you integrate with as many outside services as you want, but it also restricts the search functionality to working on just the most recently 10,000 messages. You could also consider Glip by RingCentral. The free tier of service has unlimited storage, unlimited integrations, but only includes 500 minutes of video calling. So it all depends on what you need and what you can live without. The one app on this list that is totally free, with no options to upgrade, is Ryver. The company that makes Ryver has plans to launch a compatible and integrated task-management application, which will be the upsell. The messaging part of it will always be free, according to the company. If you don't want to futz around with trying to make do with a limited free app, consider Ryver. Communicate, CollaborateBest Messaging Apps For MacAt their core, business messaging apps are just another kind of collaboration app. There are other types of collaboration apps, too, most of which go beyond the communication arm of helping groups of people coordinate some kind of work or project. For more recommendations, see PCMag's list of the best collaboration software.
